What is a Co-op membership card?

The Co-op membership card has several significant differences from the loyalty cards of other retail chains. In a nutshell: the card makes it possible to receive rewards for purchases at Co-op, and at the same time contribute to the financial support of community organizations.

Let's take a closer look.

Like many other cards, the Co-op membership card allows you to receive cashback for purchases at Co-op branded stores. The amount of reward is quite generous – 2 pence for each pound spent. The card's main distinction is its active role in charity and promotion of local support and protection funds. From every purchase you make with the card, 1-2% of the value of the money you spend will be transferred to the charity. Co-op is a co-op and your shopping activity truly supports Community Foundations. Over a hundred million pounds has already been donated to support community organizations. Impressive, isn't it? You must agree, it's a non-trivial approach to attracting customers.

We've looked at Co-op's loyalty program before, and you can read the details in these articles:

Co-op loyalty card features

The Co-op membership card allows you weekly access to personalized Co-op Food offers. All offers are available online (website or app), saving you the hassle of paper vouchers. You can choose any two offers you want to use. Just scan your card. By the way, the card is available digitally, so there's no longer need to show a plastic card at the checkout.

As we've written before, you get 2% cashback when you shop with your card. Rewards can even go as high as 5% back on Co-op-branded goods and services. Rewards accumulate in a Co-op member's personal account. They can be used at any time during the year.
Rewards can only be spent in the Co-op network. Unlike other retail chains, Co-op does not form affiliate programs and does not have satellite stores.

So, a Co-op membership entitles you to cashback, exclusive offers and personal discounts in insurance, legal services and even funeral services. It sounds strange, but Co-op does offer its members great deals on Co-op Funeralcare. Perhaps in this way, Co-op makes up for the lack of partner stores. Well, that's a really unique offer.

Be that as it may, the Co-op card cashback amount is one of the most generous. But many people are deterred by the fact that the Co-op card requires a starting fee of £1.

How much does it cost to become a coop member?

Indeed, to become a member of the cooperative, you need to contribute £1 to the general fund. This amount can be paid immediately or can be paid later from the amount of the first payment of your dividends. But it is important to understand that you will become a full member of the Co-op only after the contribution has been in your account for six months.

To pay your dues, you need to contact the Coop's Member Service (call center on 0800 0686 727).

There are two types of memberships at Coop:

  • regular members
  • associate members

The difference is very simple: a regular member has the full set of benefits, while the associate member has only partial rights and privileges.

Regular membership can be obtained after six months after making the membership fee subject to compliance with all the rules of the program.

The terms and conditions of membership are agreed upon by the Coop Charter. The provisions of the Bylaws are determined by a joint vote of the full members.

A link to the full rules is here www.coop.co.uk.
